A favourite training climb of local riders with fantastic views back over Bourg Saint Maurice and the valley road to Tignes and Val d’Isere. The road heads up through the ski resort of la Rosiere and onto the italian border at 2188m. These are the roads where Geraint Thomas took hold of the 2018 Critérium du Dauphiné and rode into the yellow jersey in the Tour de France the following month.
The Southern ascent is essentially a long and steady road to the Italian border. Starting from Bourg Saint Maurice, with a manageable gradient all the way to the summit it’s a great climb to practice finding your composure and rhythm whilst climbing for a decent length of time.
You can see the final 8 kilometres of the climb to the border ahead of you as the valley opens up after a right-hand turn as you leave La Rosiere ski resort.
The ascent can be made more difficult by turning off the main climb and taking the section through Montvalezan, which was part of the Tour de France and Critérium du Dauphine route in 2018.
