PART OF THE ETAPE DU TOUR AND TOUR DE FRANCE 2015 ROUTE FOLLOWING AN ASCENT OF COL DU GLANDON WITH A FANTASTIC DESCENT BACK INTO THE MAURIENNE VALLEY. COL DE LA CROIX DE FER IS ONE OF THE BIG ONES.
Col de la Croix de Fer, or Pass of the Iron Cross can be tackled in various ways. In 2015 the Tour de France and Etape du Tour riders reached the summit of the Croix de Fer after climbing the Col du Glandon before descending down to Saint Jean de Maurienne via Col du Mollard.
The approach from Bourg d’Oisans which is the first climb in the Marmotte sportive is an absolutely stunning road with breathtaking views. It has a more forgiving average gradient but there are some steep sections in the middle of the climb before the valley opens up and the scenery simply blows you away.
